“It couldn’t have been planned more perfectly. There was a lot of love” said Joe Barreiro about his retirement celebration held at Sleepy Hollow Country Club on October 15th. The Caddie Master for 45 years, Joe deserved a great send-off party and he received it. Hundreds of members, family and friends came to congratulate Joe and witness his induction into the Caddie Hall of Fame.
The WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund presented a book of appreciation filled with tributes from caddie scholars who worked under Joe over the years. Jay Mottola, past Executive Director of the MGA, presented a plaque on behalf of the Caddie and Golf Services Manager’s Association. Most telling of the love and support for Joe was the influx of contributions to the WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund made in his name. Mr. Robert Mayer, President of Sleepy Hollow, proudly announced the establishment of the Joe Barreiro Scholarship Fund that will provide scholarships in perpetuity to Sleepy Hollow caddies. In just a few weeks, a record $150,000 was raised.
We thank Joe for his incredible support of caddies and our program. We wish him well in his retirement and we look forward to continuing his legacy through the Fund.
